This week’s learning consisted of some wiiild things that are both pretty interesting and incredible but scary and worrisome as well. We got the opportunity to dive into yet another field of work which is the military and we focused on the engineering of products, food items, and the pharmaceutical research industry that is working to keep our troops awake in the battle field. There are multiple studies that were done to see what sort of chemical or food/drink could keep our military troops alert as much and for as long as possible. It was found that caffeine (duhh) reigned supreme and was added to nearly every food item troops would be given. From apple sauce with caffeine to caffeinated gum and beef jerky, there have been a lot of items which are being manufactured to boost troops wakefulness. Another research is beginning to test out pharmaceuticals that boost endurance by increasing red blood cell productions. There is also pills that help fight off insomnia as well as the effects

What’s up my blog fam, I hope everyone’s having a great week and that you’re getting your 8 required hours of sleep on a nightly basis (Don’t ask me about mine though)! …. …. ….Well, seeing as I technically have to update the blog every week on my sleeping hygiene and sleep schedule, I suppose I will update you even though you didn’t really have to ask and I sort of just submitted to doing so out of a responsibility I owe to the blog so… *sigh* here we go. Sunday went fabulous! I slept a good amount of hours, went to church and then drove back to Plainview since spring break was coming to an end. That night I went to bed as soon as I got there and woke up early morning for class. Monday night was the deal breaker for the week and literally whipped my sleeping schedule. So, I went to bed at 3 am and I was awake far too late to even wake up for my class the next day.  After that, I really started blowing my class absences and missed 3/4 classes on Wednesday, barely made it to the fourth

The week after spring break we watched a TV series released in 2004 called Shattered. This series was a competitive show where 12 participants were to stay awake for 7 days in order to determine who could stay awake for the longest time possible without naps or shut eye time. The competitors underwent a series of challenges they had to perform and complete to test their alertness, activeness, reaction time, memory, and overall inhibition. As the show progressed, the amount of competitors decreased as well as their alertness. The final episode starred the final three competitors and their final challenge was a rather relaxing one: they were to lay in bed in a dark room for as long as possible, whoever kept awake the longest time was the ultimate winner. Two of the three competitors fell asleep nearly milliseconds apart from each other and the third competitor was the clear winner but wasn’t told that until after two hours had elapsed since the other competitors had fallen asleep. The ov

Dear blogger,  Over the spring break I was able to finally catchup on some very much needed sleep from the sleep debt I had accumulated during school. It wasn’t so rewarding however because along with the longer sleeping sessions there were also a lot of days where I stayed up late as well, not going to bed until 3 am or so. So as I’m typing this I’m not so sure that I actually did catch up on sleep haha. Either way, I found myself needing a lot of sleep during this break. Part of it could because of my exercise program that I am doing. It was an 8 week program with a max out week at the end of week 8 which happened to be during spring break. There was a lot of heavy lifting and a lot of strain that I put my body through. I know from learning in class that my body needs a lot of rest to recover from such strains and extreme physical activity, especially if the activities are a daily thing. This week was necessary for me mentally. I needed a break from school and assignments and tests a

This last week we were able to review for our midterm and let me say something straight off the bat: there were a lot of things that I thought I knew but didn’t and there were also a lot of things I thought I didn’t know but actually did know! So after doing the review in class, I felt a bit confident but a bit worried as well for the day of the test only because it was a lot of material to cover and I wanted to make sure I knew everything on that review sheet. I know we probably wouldn’t get tested on every single meaning and phrase but it was better to be safe than sorry. The night before Christian and I spent almost 3 hours studying for the exam and we didn’t stop until it was around 1:30am. Even after that I spent a few extra minutes in my dorm room looking over the material we had gone over. I mentioned sleeping early and waking up early to feel more able to perform higher in these kinds of exams but I didn’t take that advice and it almost bit me in my behind. I woke up and I rea

Bloggers and students here and there beware, Midterms are among us and you know what that means: all nighters and late night study sessions fro tests we didn't worry about studying fro until the day before! We all know how stressful midterms can be and we may see it as a necessity to stay awake later than usual to get ahead on the notes and to study for that exam, but as a college student and as someone who’s taken a few midterm exams already, I’d like to be the first to say that it is not worth staying up late to study. It is better to fall asleep early, wake up early to study, and have a better chance of retaining the information you learned for the next day or the day of the exam. You don’t want to stay up or not sleep at all the night before the exam and then be drooling all over the test when you’re taking taking it or worse, not show up at all because you overslept. Take this advice! Trust me that you’ll thank yourself for it later and me as well (I take Chips Ahoy soft cooki
