As we approach the midpoint of this semester, I’d like to give an overview of everything I’ve been able to learn from this class and how it has contributed immensely to my o personal sleep life as well. For starters, I can’t express my gratitude enough for being enrolled in this class; it has truly been an eye opening experience every class day. I have been able to understand the process of sleep, the stages once you’re actually asleep, how your heart rate fluctuates and depending on what stage you’re in (both REM and NREM), your body uses said stage in order to heal your body, release chemicals which are essential for growth in teens, and to return the body to homeostasis to start your next day healthy and active.  The topic that we’ve discussed in class that has really intrigued me is basically anything having to do with sleep and teens. I was always familiar with sleep being important for recovery and growth but I never measured its importance for those prepubescent teenagers! The

This week in out Sleep Seminar's class we discussed a lot of topics regarding jobs and how they affect the view of ourselves and inadvertently affect our sleep habits as well. The topic was centered around American workers being part of the country that works 100+ more hours than nay other country in the world. There was a common theme with the idea of wanting to work more and putting aside vacations, family, relationships, and even health in order to get those overtime hours in. The idea that being wealthy is the equivalent of being successful being a concept engraved into American society is the end result of overworked and tired individuals.  We also watched a documentary titled Who Needs Sleep?  which was based on the film industry and its dangerous working hours which have been the result of many deaths from car crashes. The film sparked a wart for the change of long working hours for US film industries and gained popularity across the world. Though not much change was done i

For this week’s class we dove into the deep end of the medical field and the coexistent matter of sleep within their perspective fields. We learned that because doctors, surgeons, and really anyone in the medical field are in an incredibly demanding field, they are required to be awake for many hours a week and sometimes go days without any sleep at all. Through one article, we were able to determine the dangers of being a doctor and compared it to that of a truck driver.  Within a week, doctors work anywhere between 60 to 100 hours, and they are on call for almost all of those hours. There could be a shortage of doctors and maybe that is why they are required to stay awake for so long, but we know that even from the start of medical school students in training are put through vigorous shifts of no sleep to get their bodies used to that by the time they are out of residency. It is no wonder that it is extremely difficult to become a doctor or surgeon, and it also no surprise that many

Howdy my amazing blogviewers (yes, I mean all 3 of my loyal viewers), This week’s sleep schedule for me was really good actually. Surprisingly, I was able to get 8 hours of sleep from Monday through Thursday and let me tell you, sleeping works some wonders to the human body! I was able to get a lot done as far as homework assignments, work responsibilities, and school engagement. My workout life seemed to have been boosted as well as I was able to hit my required numbers for all my lifts (squat, bench, deadlift) with a bit more in the tank afterwards. So overall it was a good start to the week!  It did however, take a downhill turn starting Thursday night all the way through Sunday. I drove home on Thursday ay 8pm and I drove a solid 6 hours back to El Paso. I didn’t feel tired but I drank my usual energy drink, which by the way, I realized something strange regarding caffeinated drinks. They have a different effect on my body depending on the brand. I decided to drink a different bra

This week in our sleep, science, and sleeplessness class we dove into the realm of theology and faith as well as some topics relating the ideas that are brought out and about from famous book writer C S Lewis through the studious eyes and mind of Dr. Jerry Root. We first got a chance to meet Dr. Root on Tuesday February 1 for our Honors class and to be frank, he amazed me with the way he would talk. I’ve always knew such words existed in the world and such knowledge kept within the minds of individuals but to hear someone make simple sense of these amazing words and make the topics so engaging and attractive to the human ear, I’ve heard it best from none other than Dr. Root himself. The main topic that I was able to grasp from his talks was the idea of predestination and free will. The idea that God has not only predestined our lives and everything in them including every specific action we take but also the integration of free will which is what God has also given us. It begs the que

So for this blog we will be talking about a specific day and we will revolve the conversation around what happened throughout that day. So that day was Friday, February 4 and if we are being completely honest, nobody goes to bed early on a Friday because it’s the weekend and people like to go out and go to Lubbock and what not and nobody will actually go to sleep early unless they like, have their priorities and life straight, I don’t know… ANYWAYS, back to this very important date; So an opportunity arose in the late afternoon to make a bit extra cash and it required that we stayed up during the night checking and walking through and inspecting the third floor of Jimmy Dean. What had happened was that the fire system wasn’t working for the third floor and there would be nobody to go and fix it until the very next day in the morning. So once our RHS had sent a message on our RA chat about the opportunity, I acted quickly and without hesitation! Now the reason I acted out so fast was b
