Blog #5 for HONO1397

 So for this blog we will be talking about a specific day and we will revolve the conversation around what happened throughout that day. So that day was Friday, February 4 and if we are being completely honest, nobody goes to bed early on a Friday because it’s the weekend and people like to go out and go to Lubbock and what not and nobody will actually go to sleep early unless they like, have their priorities and life straight, I don’t know…

ANYWAYS, back to this very important date; So an opportunity arose in the late afternoon to make a bit extra cash and it required that we stayed up during the night checking and walking through and inspecting the third floor of Jimmy Dean. What had happened was that the fire system wasn’t working for the third floor and there would be nobody to go and fix it until the very next day in the morning. So once our RHS had sent a message on our RA chat about the opportunity, I acted quickly and without hesitation! Now the reason I acted out so fast was because I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to see how my body would react and feel throughout the night as I stayed awake and inspected the third floor. I also took the opportunity so I could have something to write for this blog, but for the sake of the class topic, we’ll just say I did this in the name of SLEEP SCIENCE!

And so it began: I made a quick trip to the grocery store to get some cookies and an energy drink (because why not) and I told myself I would sleep early (talk about being a hypocrite huh?) in order to be able to function properly the rest of the night. But, because I got caught up with doing some reading by ethical and moral philosopher Andrew Light, I didn’t go to bed until 11:30pm. Once I went to bed, I hit sleep hard. I was meant to wake up at 3am but I didnt wake up until 30 minutes after. 

As I was doing my first walk through, I felt very exhausted and my eyes kept shutting off as I would walk through the third floor. I finished the walk through, all was clear and I headed back to my room and I tried to go to bed but in an unsuccessful attempt and after a lot of tossing and turning,  I went to bed 15 minutes before my next walk through. I didn’t even get through stage 2 of the sleep cycle before the alarm went off, and I was off again to do the next walk through. It was now 4 am and I was feeling a bit more awake for some reason? I was more active in the walk through and inspected everything more closely and I went back to my room, laid on the bed and as soon as my head touched the pillow I was out like a light. Slept comfortably until 5 am where I went to do my next walk through, with the same amount of activeness as the first round I did. Did the walk through, wen to my room, and again I couldn’t go back to sleep and I ended up staying awake until 6 pm for the last walk through.


Now, throughout the night and as I write this I am wondering:

Why is it that when I was feeling exhausted and tired I wasn’t able to go back to bed as quickly?

Why is it that when I felt more awake and active I was able to just go to sleep so fast and without a problem?

I really don’t know the answers to these questions but I do know one thing: never again am I doing that for some extra cash, a horrible mistake, absolutely not worth it.

  1. That sounds like a difficult experiment! Glad you were able to make it on all your rounds for safety reasons in the dorm, but I hope you were able to catch up some later in the weekend. Probably the walking around or being in the light shifted your hormones enough to confuse your rhythms into being wakeful.

  2. This is so cool that you used this misfortune for the dorm as an experiment(lol)! I would have never taught about it! Reading through your experience I myself am curious as well at why you couldn't sleep after coming back sometimes, and at other times you were able to fall asleep just fine. Interesting and strange at the same time. Probably does have to so something with your circadian rhythms and your in-and-out of the stages of sleep.
