This week in out Sleep Seminar's class we discussed a lot of topics regarding jobs and how they affect the view of ourselves and inadvertently affect our sleep habits as well.
The topic was centered around American workers being part of the country that works 100+ more hours than nay other country in the world. There was a common theme with the idea of wanting to work more and putting aside vacations, family, relationships, and even health in order to get those overtime hours in. The idea that being wealthy is the equivalent of being successful being a concept engraved into American society is the end result of overworked and tired individuals.
We also watched a documentary titled Who Needs Sleep? which was based on the film industry and its dangerous working hours which have been the result of many deaths from car crashes. The film sparked a wart for the change of long working hours for US film industries and gained popularity across the world. Though not much change was done in the end, the film was an eye opener for many regarding the potential dangers of working such long hours.
Overall, the topics of work and priorities were a mix up of troubling individuals trying to find their why and ruining their physical and mental health all to gain financial wealth.
Yes--well written and discussed here. I keep thinking about how, even though we've only done a deep dive into a few industries for discussion, I'm sure there are countless others with workers who are suffering from long hours without any way around it. And some really want and need the hours for income and health care reasons, but they are suffering nonetheless because of the long hours. Vicious cycle.
